Photographs by Ruth Calder, 1952 to 1961

Gallery 1 · 3 April to 30 August 2027

For twenty years Ruth Calder developed other people's photographs for the Harlow Gazette. On her own time she photographed the town: the mill at shift change, Main Street in the 1956 storm, the Saturday dances at the Grange hall.

A 1950s black and white documentary photograph of mill workers in work clothes and caps walking out through a factory gate at the end of a shift, overcast light, candid, film grain.

Shift Change, Harlow Mill

Calder stood at the mill gate with her camera at waist height so the men would not notice it. Most of them look past her, toward home.
